Use a coherent set of symbols to communicate meaning quickly and consistently across contexts.
The Diagnostic Story¶
Symptom: Users hover over icons to read tooltips for meanings that were supposed to be obvious. Different teams use the same symbol to mean different things, and the same concept gets different symbols across surfaces. A set of icons that looks visually polished has no consistent rule connecting image to meaning. A symbol that works for the in-group is actively confusing or offensive to audiences outside it.
Pivot: Define a bounded symbol set, map each symbol to a specific intended meaning, identify the convention — resemblance, culture, repetition, context — that makes the mapping interpretable, test it with the actual audiences and contexts, and establish usage rules with governance over additions and retirements.
Resolution: Recognition speeds up and interpretation errors drop as repeated exposure strengthens the mapping. Visual language becomes coherent across products, spaces, documents, or institutions because each symbol carries a stable, documented meaning. Safety and inclusivity improve when cultural and accessibility assumptions are checked rather than assumed.

Diagnostic problem
Symbols are inconsistent, culturally ambiguous, visually confusable, or disconnected from the meanings they are meant to communicate, so people misread identity, status, risk, action, location, value, or category.
