The Diagnostic Story

Symptom: New participants enter a domain confident — they have not yet seen the edge cases, the expert critique, or the hidden complexity that changes how everything looks. Then reality arrives: the first serious feedback, the first expert comparison, the first authentic performance condition. Confidence drops faster than visible competence rises, and the learner reads the drop as personal failure rather than as a normal consequence of finally seeing what they could not see before. Some hide their confusion; some quit; some retreat into defensive overconfidence to protect the illusion of mastery.
