Package-Deal Fallacy¶
Treat a set of positions bundled together only by coalition, tradition, or product line as if they were logically inseparable, so that endorsing one forces endorsing all and rejecting one requires rejecting the whole.
Core Idea¶
The package-deal fallacy is the reasoning error of treating a contingently bundled set of positions, beliefs, traits, or policies as if its members were logically inseparable — so that endorsing one item commits the reasoner to all the others, and rejecting one requires rejecting the whole. The bundling is sociological or historical: items got grouped because particular coalitions, traditions, movements, or product lines happened to advance them together, not because any logical entailment runs between them. The fallacy treats the second type of connection as the first, compressing the hypothesis space and making it invisible that positions combining "yes to X, no to Y" are coherent options — because the bundle's label renders those combinations unthinkable. The move appears in political reasoning ("if you support X, you must support the rest of the platform"), religious dispute ("you either accept the tradition's full doctrinal package or none of it"), scientific labeling ("Darwinism" treated as a monolithic commitment when its component claims have independent evidential status), product design (features that are technically modular but commercially sold as inseparable), and identity discourse (an identity label treated as fixing a full slate of opinions). The diagnostic is decomposition: itemize the bundle's members and check which pairwise links are logical entailments and which are merely conventional co-occurrence; nearly all bundles dissolve under this test into a list of separable claims, each assessable on its own merits.

What It Is Not¶
- Not a false dilemma. A false dilemma offers too few options, presenting two when more exist. The package-deal fallacy presents one option as indivisible when it is decomposable. The defect is not the number of choices but the false gluing of items within a single labeled choice.
- Not guilt by association. Guilt by association imports a bundle member's properties onto anyone holding any member. The package-deal fallacy is the prior step that supplies the supposedly-inseparable bundle those moves stand on — it manufactures the indivisible package; guilt by association then exploits it.
- Not the composition fallacy. The composition fallacy infers the whole's properties from a part's (or vice versa). The package-deal fallacy infers attitudes toward the whole from attitudes toward a part — "you endorse X, so you must endorse the package." One is about properties transferring; the other is about commitments being forced.
- Not a claim that no bundles are genuine. Decomposition does not dissolve every bundle: some pairwise links really are logical entailments, and those stay joined. The fallacy is treating contingent co-occurrence as necessary linkage — the test is to classify each link and keep the load-bearing ones, not to deny that any items belong together.
- Not a substrate-independent pattern. The move requires an agent who can reify a label and reason about it as a unit; a thermostat, an ecosystem, or a chemical reaction has no bundle to mis-treat. Unlike
asymmetryorfeedback, which operate whether or not any reasoner observes them, the package-deal fallacy lives only where a reasoner draws inferences about a labeled bundle. Scope of Application¶
The package-deal fallacy lives within reasoning, rhetoric, and informal fallacies — wherever an agent reifies a labeled bundle of claims and treats contingently-grouped items as logically inseparable; beyond that there is no substrate (a thermostat, an ecosystem, or a chemical reaction has no bundle to mis-treat), and the genuinely portable content is the necessary-versus-contingent-linkage distinction and the reification-of-contingent-bundles parent, not the named fallacy with its all-or-nothing-slate cargo.
- Political reasoning — "conservatism" or "progressivism" treated as a fixed bundle, so disagreeing with one plank obligates rejecting all and endorsing one commits to the rest.
- Religious dispute — a tradition's doctrinal package presented as an all-or-nothing acceptance, occluding the historical syncretism that produced it.
- Scientific labeling — "Darwinism," "Freudianism," or "neoliberalism" treated as monolithic when their component claims have independent evidential status.
- Product and contract design — features or terms sold as inseparable when their joint pricing reflects market segmentation rather than technical necessity.
- Identity discourse — an identity label presumed to fix a full slate of opinions, so holding one bundle member is taken to imply all the others.

Clarity¶
Naming the package-deal fallacy separates two ways items can be grouped that argument routinely conflates: necessary linkage, where the members are genuinely entangled so that one entails another, and contingent linkage, where a coalition, tradition, movement, or product line merely happened to advance them together. The fallacy reads the second as the first, and the label's payoff is that it makes the buried alternatives reappear. A bundle treated as indivisible compresses the hypothesis space until "yes to X, no to Y" becomes literally unthinkable — the package's name does the occluding — and recognizing the move restores those mixed positions as coherent options on the table. With it, a reasoner can refuse to be positioned by an interlocutor's bundle-attribution ("if you believe X you must believe Y") instead of being forced to defend a slate they never adopted.

The concept also sharpens its place among neighboring fallacies: it is not the false dilemma (too few options offered) but one option falsely presented as indivisible; not guilt by association (importing a member's properties onto a holder) but the prior step that supplies the supposedly-inseparable bundle those moves stand on. A reasoner evaluating an argument that turns on a labeled bundle — a political platform, a religious tradition's doctrine, an "-ism" like Darwinism or neoliberalism, a software framework, a cable package, an identity slate — confronts what presents as an indivisible object demanding an up-or-down verdict: accept the whole platform or reject it, take the framework entire or not at all. Met that way, the bundle's internal structure stays opaque and the analyst is pushed toward a single coarse judgment over a sprawling, heterogeneous mass of claims. The package-deal fallacy compresses that whole class of situations to one operation applied uniformly to any bundle, whatever its subject matter: decompose the label into its member items, and classify each pairwise link as a logical entailment or merely conventional co-occurrence. The single parameter the analyst tracks is the type of each link — necessary or contingent — and the regularity the concept supplies is that the connective tissue of most labeled bundles is sociological or historical (a coalition, tradition, movement, or product line advanced the items together) rather than logical, so under the test the bundle predictably dissolves into a list of separable claims, each then assessable on its own merits. This delivers two distinct economies. First, it restores a hypothesis space the label had collapsed: a bundle treated as indivisible makes "yes to X, no to Y" literally unthinkable, and itemizing the links re-expands the option set from the bundle's two endpoints (all or nothing) to the full combinatorial range of mixed positions — the dimensionality the label was hiding becomes visible and available. Second, it routes the heavy work downstream of a cheap test: the analyst need not adjudicate the merits of the whole package, only run the link-type classification, after which the surviving genuine entailments (the few load-bearing links) stay bundled and everything else is unglued for independent evaluation. The branch structure is therefore: for each pairwise link, entailment → keep the items joined; conventional co-occurrence → separate. The same single test also fixes the move's relationship to its neighbors and surfaces a readable diagnostic about motive — who benefits from the gluing (coalitions, vendors, traditions that gain from forced-pair acceptance) — so that the sprawling problem "should I accept this entire labeled position?" reduces to a uniform decomposition with a per-link binary classifier, whose output is a separated list the reasoner can then judge piece by piece.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The package-deal fallacy licenses inferences that all turn on classifying the links inside a labeled bundle rather than judging the bundle whole. Diagnostic: handed a bundle presented as indivisible — a political platform, a doctrinal package, an "-ism" like Darwinism, a software framework, a cable package — the analyst decomposes the label into its member items and asks of each pairwise link whether it is a logical entailment or merely conventional co-occurrence, and infers from the regularity that most bundles' connective tissue is sociological or historical that the typical bundle will dissolve under the test into separable claims. So an inference of the form "you support X, therefore you must support Y" is diagnosed as fallacious whenever the X–Y link turns out conventional, and the bundle's apparent indivisibility is read as an artifact of its label, not a fact about its contents. A clean counterfactual probe sharpens the classification: if item X were removed, would the remaining items still cohere? — if they would, the link was contingent and the items were never logically glued. Interventionist: because the fault is the gluing, the corrective is decomposition before evaluation — itemize the bundle, separate the conventionally-linked members, and assess each on its own merits — and the move it most directly licenses is refusing to be positioned by an interlocutor's bundle-attribution, declining to defend a slate one never adopted. The same operation runs constructively in design: where a bundle is sold as inseparable but is technically modular, the analyst predicts that an à-la-carte alternative is coherent and constructible (per-feature pricing, mixed policy positions), and reads who benefits from the gluing — coalitions, vendors, traditions that gain from forced-pair acceptance — as a guide to where the bundling is being maintained against the reasoner's interest. What generalizes is not "package-deal fallacy" but two thinner things it sits over. First, the bare structural distinction it exploits — necessary versus contingent linkage among bundled items, and the separability that follows when links are conventional — is the portable core; it is the misreading of an aggregate (aggregation names the pooling itself, this names treating the pooled bundle as indivisible), and the cross-context lesson "check which links are load-bearing before judging the whole" rides on that distinction rather than on the fallacy's name. Second, the seed flags a broader (still reasoning-domain) parent — reification of contingent bundles — which would also cover sibling errors like treating a statistical cluster as a natural kind; the package-deal fallacy is its attitude-toward-a-labeled-position instance. The cross-domain lesson should be carried by that reification pattern, not by the named fallacy, whose specific cargo (the all-or-nothing slate, the coalition/vendor/tradition motive, the political and product exemplars) stays bound to argument about labeled positions. Examples¶
Canonical¶
Ernst Mayr's decomposition of "Darwinism" is the diagnostic performed in full. Treated as a monolith, one either is or isn't a Darwinist. Mayr (1985) itemized the label into five logically independent theses: that evolution occurs at all, that all life shares common descent, that change is gradual, that species multiply, and that natural selection is the primary mechanism. These are separable, and the historical record shows it: around 1900 many biologists accepted common descent while doubting that selection was the main driver, the period later called "the eclipse of Darwinism." Running the link-classification test, most pairwise links among the five turn out to be conventional co-occurrence, not entailment — one can hold "yes to common descent, no to strict selectionism" coherently, a position the single word "Darwinism" renders invisible.
Mapped back: The five theses are the contingent bundle; "Darwinism" is the occluding label that hides its compositeness and drives the indivisibility move (Darwinist or not). Mayr's itemization is the link-classification diagnostic, and recovering "common descent yes, strict selectionism no" is the hypothesis-space compression undone. Applied / In Practice¶
The antitrust case United States v. Microsoft turned on exactly this decomposition. Microsoft argued that its Internet Explorer browser was an inseparable, integrated part of the Windows operating system; the Justice Department argued the two were distinct products tied together for commercial advantage. The legal question was precisely whether the browser–OS link was a technical entailment or a contingent bundle maintained by the vendor — and the court found the tie was not genuine technical necessity, since the browser could be separated from the OS. Related remedies elsewhere forced unbundling, as when the European Commission required a version of Windows sold without Media Player. The decomposition test, run as competition law, exposed a commercially glued bundle presented as indivisible.
Mapped back: Windows-plus-browser is the contingent bundle; "integrated product" is the occluding label backing the indivisibility move that the two cannot be split. The court's inquiry into technical necessity versus commercial tie is the link-classification diagnostic. That Microsoft, not users, gained from the forced pairing is the gluing interest the concept tells the analyst to look for.
Structural Tensions¶
T1: Dissolving bundles versus keeping the load-bearing ones (decomposition is a test, not a solvent). The diagnostic's headline result — most labeled bundles are held together by coalition, tradition, or product line, so most dissolve under the link-classification test — invites an over-reading in which every bundle is contingent and any gluing is fallacy. The concept explicitly resists this: some pairwise links really are logical entailments, and those must stay joined. The tension is that the same decomposition move that liberates a reasoner from a false slate can, run indiscriminately, atomize a genuinely entangled position into pieces that no longer cohere — treating "common descent" and "evolution occurs" as fully independent when one presupposes the other. The test's value depends on its being applied per-link with a real entailment/co-occurrence verdict, not swung as a blanket presumption that nothing belongs together. Diagnostic: Does the classification actually distinguish which links survive removal of a member, or is it assuming in advance that all links are conventional?
T2: The occluding label as cognitive economy versus concealment (the same compression that hides is what makes the bundle usable). A single word for a sprawling set of positions — "Darwinism," "the framework," "conservatism" — is not merely a trap; it is a genuine economy that lets people coordinate, cite, and reason about a large object without enumerating it each time. The fallacy exploits exactly the feature that makes labels useful: compression hides internal structure. There is no version of the label that keeps the shorthand's efficiency while wearing its compositeness on its face. The tension is that stripping every bundle back to its itemized members to prevent the indivisibility move also forfeits the summarizing power that made the label worth having — and a reasoner who refuses all bundling pays in unmanageable enumeration. Diagnostic: Is the label being used to compress for communication, or to force acceptance of the whole slate on the strength of one member?
T3: Exposing the gluing versus fracturing a genuine coalition (decomposition as its own rhetorical weapon). The concept tells the analyst to ask who benefits from the gluing — vendors, coalitions, traditions. But the decomposition move has a mirror-image abuse: calling "package-deal fallacy" is itself a rhetorical lever that can fracture a package whose members were, for the actor's purposes, legitimately bundled — a political coalition that only functions as a slate, a product whose modules interoperate to deliver the value. An interlocutor who demands "defend each plank separately" can dissolve a coordinated position into individually-contestable fragments precisely because coordination, not entailment, held it together. The tension is that "these links are merely conventional" is true of many genuine, functional bundles, so the fallacy-charge can be deployed to delegitimize contingent-but-purposeful assembly. Diagnostic: Is decomposition here recovering hidden options, or dismantling a coordination that serves a real purpose the entailment-test was never meant to judge?
T4: The logical link-test versus the motive heuristic (two diagnostics that can disagree). The concept supplies two ways to spot a bad bundle: a structural test (is each link entailment or co-occurrence?) and a motive reading (who profits from forced-pair acceptance?). These usually point the same way but are not the same instrument, and they can diverge. A bundle can be maintained by an obvious interested party yet still contain genuine entailments; a bundle can have no visible beneficiary yet be entirely conventional. Leaning on the motive heuristic risks a genetic move — inferring "contingent, therefore separable" from "someone benefits" — which the structural test would not license. The tension is that the readable, persuasive signal (cui bono) is the less rigorous one, and the rigorous signal (link classification) is the harder, less rhetorically vivid one. Diagnostic: Is the bundle being called contingent because its links fail the entailment test, or only because an interested party can be named?
T5: Package-deal fallacy versus its fallacy neighbors (a boundary that must be held on three sides). The concept is flanked by moves it is easily fused with, and its diagnostic value depends on holding each boundary. Package-deal fallacy sits at framed-leaning, very close to the framed pole — a normative reasoning verdict held just off the extreme by an unusually clean structural skeleton. Its evaluative weight reads framed: it is a fallacy, a verdict that a piece of reasoning is defective (treating contingent co-occurrence as necessary entailment), not a neutral mechanism. Human-practice-bound reads strongly framed, and the entry says so outright: the move requires an agent who can reify a label and reason about it as a unit — a thermostat, an ecosystem, or a chemical reaction has no bundle to mis-treat — so, unlike substrate-spanning primes such as asymmetry or feedback that operate whether or not any reasoner observes them, this lives only where a reasoner draws inferences. Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶
This section decides why the package-deal fallacy is a domain-specific abstraction and not a prime — the portable core is a necessary-versus-contingent-linkage distinction already carried by its parents, while the all-or-nothing-slate machinery is welded to argument about labeled positions.
What is skeletal (could lift toward a cross-domain prime). Strip the rhetoric-and-fallacy framing and a thin relational structure survives: among items pooled under one label, some links are genuine entailments and others are merely conventional co-occurrence, so treating the pool as an indivisible unit misreads contingent grouping as necessary linkage. That is the necessary-versus-contingent-linkage distinction, and it lifts to two parents the entry names — the broader reification of contingent bundles pattern (which also covers treating a statistical cluster as a natural kind, an actor's brand as a fixed essence, etc.) and aggregation (which names the pooling that this move then wrongly treats as indivisible). The distinction itself — check which links are load-bearing before judging the whole — is genuinely portable across any setting where things get bundled and a decision hangs on whether the bundle is separable. What is domain-bound. What makes the move the package-deal fallacy in particular is informal-logic furniture that does not survive extraction. The decisive test is the entry's own and unusually sharp: the move requires an agent who can reify a label and reason about it as a unit — a thermostat, an ecosystem, or a chemical reaction has no bundle to mis-treat, so unlike substrate-spanning primes such as asymmetry or feedback (which operate whether or not any reasoner observes them) the fallacy simply does not exist absent a reasoner drawing inferences. Strip the reasoning agent and the entire distinctive content evaporates, leaving only the abstract linkage distinction. The distinctive content is constituted by exactly the reasoning practice the prime bar asks it to shed.
Why this does not clear the prime bar. A prime's vocabulary travels and its transfer is recognition of the same mechanism, not analogy. The package-deal fallacy's transfer is bimodal. Within reasoning and rhetoric it travels intact as full mechanism — the decompose-and-classify-each-link test, the hypothesis-space re-expansion, the counterfactual and historical probes, and the cui-bono reading carry without translation across political reasoning, religious dispute, scientific labeling, product and contract design, identity discourse, and software ecosystems, because each supplies the one thing it needs, a reasoner reifying a labeled bundle of claims. Beyond reasoning there is no substrate at all: with no agent to mis-treat a label, invoking "package-deal fallacy" is a category slip, not a transfer. And when the bare structural lesson is wanted cross-domain — check which links in a bundle are load-bearing before judging or acting on the whole — it is already carried, in more general form, by the reification-of-contingent-bundles parent and the necessary-versus-contingent-linkage distinction (with aggregation naming the pooling itself). The cross-domain reach belongs to those parents; "package-deal fallacy," as named, is the attitude-toward-a-labeled-position instance and carries all-or-nothing-slate cargo bound to argument. It clears the domain-specific bar comfortably for reasoning and rhetoric, and its skeleton is clean enough to hold it just off the framed pole, but its only substrate-spanning content is the linkage distinction its parents already carry.

The defect is not the number of choices but the false gluing of items within a single labeled choice. Guilt by association. Imports a bundle member's properties (or taint) onto anyone holding any member. The package-deal fallacy is the prior step that manufactures the supposedly-inseparable bundle those moves stand on — it glues the slate; guilt by association then transfers a member's discredit across it. Tell: is the move transferring a member's bad property onto a holder (guilt by association), or forcing acceptance of the whole slate from endorsement of one plank (package-deal)?
