Core Idea

Reification is the structural pattern in which an abstraction — a model, category, score, schema, summary, or representational artifact — is treated as if it were the substrate it was designed to summarize, with the original referential link allowed to atrophy. The abstraction hardens into an object that can be acted on, optimized against, defended, or attacked; agents downstream begin to relate to it as the thing itself rather than as a designer's construct under a faithfulness claim. Three roles are obligatory: a substrate, the underlying domain being summarized; an abstraction, the designed artifact that summarizes selected features of the substrate; and an identification act, in which the abstraction is mistaken for the substrate, severing the audit trail back to the underlying referent.

The pathology is not the abstraction itself. Abstractions are necessary, and constructing them is unavoidable. The pathology is the loss of provenance: actors forget the abstraction was constructed, forget what was selectively preserved and selectively dropped, forget by whom and for what purpose, and treat the artifact as a found object rather than a made one. Reification is therefore distinguished from the benign acts that precede it by the disappearance of a specific discipline — the routine traversal of the path from the artifact back to what it represents. The faithfulness claim that every abstraction implicitly carries becomes invisible, and once invisible it cannot be checked, defended, or revised. What was a deliberate, contestable choice about what to keep and what to drop is reread as a fact about the world.

How would you explain it like I'm…

Map Becomes the Land

A map is a drawing of a place — it's not the real place. Reification is when people forget that, and start treating the map as if it were the actual land. They argue about the map and fix the map, while forgetting it was just something someone drew to help, and that the real place might not match it anymore.

Mistaking the Summary

Sometimes we make a simple stand-in for something complicated — a score, a label, a chart, a category. It's supposed to be a summary that helps us, and it always leaves some things out on purpose. Reification is when people forget it's just a summary somebody built and start treating it as the real thing itself. They optimize it, defend it, or attack it, but they stop checking whether it still matches what it was supposed to describe. The summary hardens into an object, and the link back to the real thing quietly disappears.

The Map Is Not the Place

Reification is when an abstraction — a model, category, score, schema, or summary — gets treated as if it were the very thing it was built to summarize, with the original referential link allowed to wither. The abstraction hardens into an object that can be acted on, optimized against, defended, or attacked, and people start relating to it as the thing itself rather than as a designer's construct making a faithfulness claim. Three roles are involved: a substrate (the real domain being summarized), an abstraction (the designed artifact that summarizes selected features), and an identification act (mistaking the abstraction for the substrate). The problem isn't the abstraction — those are necessary and unavoidable. The problem is the loss of provenance: forgetting it was constructed, what was kept and dropped, by whom, and for what purpose.

Reification is the structural pattern in which an abstraction — a model, category, score, schema, summary, or representational artifact — is treated as if it were the substrate it was designed to summarize, with the original referential link allowed to atrophy. The abstraction hardens into an object that can be acted on, optimized against, defended, or attacked; downstream agents relate to it as the thing itself rather than as a designer's construct under a faithfulness claim. Three roles are obligatory: a substrate, the underlying domain being summarized; an abstraction, the designed artifact summarizing selected features of the substrate; and an identification act, in which the abstraction is mistaken for the substrate, severing the audit trail back to the referent. The pathology is not the abstraction itself — abstractions are necessary and constructing them is unavoidable — but the loss of provenance: actors forget the abstraction was constructed, what was selectively preserved and dropped, by whom and for what purpose, and treat the artifact as a found object rather than a made one. Reification is thus distinguished from the benign acts preceding it by the disappearance of one discipline — the routine traversal back from the artifact to what it represents. Once the implicit faithfulness claim becomes invisible, it can no longer be checked, defended, or revised, and a deliberate, contestable choice about what to keep is reread as a fact about the world.

A configuration exhibits reification when each of the following holds:

  • A substrate. An underlying domain — territory, phenomenon, population, business reality — exists to be summarized.
  • A faithfulness-selective abstraction. A designed artifact — model, category, score, schema, dashboard, OKR — summarizes selected features of the substrate, keeping some and dropping others by deliberate choice.
  • An implicit faithfulness claim. The abstraction carries a (usually unstated) claim that it faithfully represents the substrate under some convention and purpose.
  • An identification act. The abstraction is treated as if it were the substrate it was designed to summarize — acted on, optimized against, defended, attacked as the thing itself.
  • A provenance/audit-trail link. A path runs from the artifact back to what it represents: who built it, when, for what purpose, what was selected and dropped.
  • The atrophy of that link. The defining failure: the audit trail is allowed to lapse, so the constructed artifact is reread as a found object and the faithfulness claim becomes invisible and uncheckable. The pathology is the lost provenance, not the abstraction itself.
  • The authority-scales-with-temptation invariant. The more polished, authoritative, and institutionally embedded the abstraction, the higher the cost of re-anchoring and the stronger the temptation to skip it — so the highest-stakes abstractions are the most prone to reification.

These components compose into a provenance-loss diagnosis: a faithfulness-selective abstraction identified with its substrate while the audit trail back to the referent atrophies — repaired by re-anchoring, exposing provenance, and probing external coupling, not by discarding the artifact.

What It Is Not

  • Not abstraction itself (see abstraction). abstraction is the benign, necessary act of constructing a faithfulness-selective summary; reification is the failure of treating that summary as the substrate once its audit trail lapses. The pathology is the lost provenance, not the abstracting.
  • Not formalization (see formalization). formalization renders something into explicit, manipulable structure; reification is the forgetting that the formal artifact was constructed and mistaking it for the thing. Formalization can be done with the faithfulness claim fully live; reification is precisely its loss.
  • Not metric-gaming (see goodharts_law). goodharts_law is what happens when a reified metric is optimized against — the artifact-substrate gap exploited; reification is the prior identification that makes the metric a target at all. Goodhart is a downstream consequence, not the move itself.
  • Not essentialism (see essentialism). essentialism treats a category as having a fixed inner nature; reification is the broader move of treating any abstraction (score, dashboard, map) as the substrate. Essentialism about constructed categories is one species of reification, not its whole.
  • Not a wrong abstraction. Reification is not the claim that the model is inaccurate; a perfectly faithful abstraction is reified the moment it is identified with its substrate and its provenance goes uncheckable. The fault is the severed tether, not the representation's quality.
  • Common misclassification. Anti-abstraction overcorrection — concluding that because the map distorts, all models are suspect and should be discarded. Catch it by asking whether the artifact is being identified with its substrate (faithfulness claim invisible) or merely used as a summary (claim live and checkable); the fix is restoring the tether, not abandoning the artifact.

Broad Use

The same move recurs across substrates with no shared vocabulary. In cartography it is map-territory confusion: treating projection-induced distortions as features of the geography, or administrative boundaries on the map as natural kinds of the terrain — the canonical philosophical case. In economics and finance it is treating GDP, market cap, or a price ratio as the thing rather than a constructed measurement of it, and treating a credit score as a fact about a person rather than a statistical prediction about repayment. In clinical and psychiatric classification it is treating diagnostic categories as natural kinds rather than constructed nosologies. In organizational practice it is treating the org chart, the strategy deck, the OKR, or the JIRA board as the company. In statistical and machine-learning modeling it is treating model scores as properties of the person or object rather than as outputs of a particular fit on particular data. The shape recurs again in qualitative research (a designer-built theme treated as a found pattern), in linguistics (cluster labels like race or personality type read as joints in nature), in software (the database schema mistaken for the business domain), and in bureaucratic and legal forms (the status flag treated as the underlying state of the world). In every case the abstraction designed to summarize a substrate is treated as that substrate, with predictable downstream errors that the recovery move — re-anchoring to the substrate — corrects.

Clarity

Reification clarifies a distinction the surrounding vocabulary blurs. Abstraction names the act of constructing a faithfulness-selective summary; representation names the resulting artifact under a stated convention; reification names the forgetting of those two facts — the move in which the summary is treated as the thing. The prime makes visible a single epistemological failure that many separate fields have noticed under separate names: commodity fetishism, map-territory confusion, hypostatization, concretism, misplaced concreteness, theme reification, validity-without-construct. By collecting these under one structural shape, it lets an analyst pose a sharp diagnostic that survives substrate swap: what substrate does this artifact summarize, and what is the audit trail back to it? If the answer is unavailable or treated as uninteresting, reification is present. This reframing matters because it separates the failure from the artifacts it parasitizes. The model, the category, the score are not themselves the problem and need not be discarded; what has lapsed is the reflective discipline that kept them tethered to their referents. Naming the lapse, rather than the artifact, points the corrective at the right target.

Manages Complexity

Reification names a failure regime that scales with the sophistication of an abstraction layer. As models, dashboards, metrics, and categories grow more polished and more institutionally embedded, the structural cost of re-asking what this is an abstraction of rises, and the structural temptation to skip the question rises with it. The prime gives the analyst a compact vocabulary for that cost: instead of separately diagnosing goal-displacement, metric-fixation, category-essentialism, and map-confusion, a single name covers the move, and a single intervention family applies — restore the audit trail, sample back from the abstraction to the substrate, run a ground-truth probe, disclose provenance. This compression is what makes an otherwise diffuse class of organizational and epistemic pathologies tractable. Rather than treating each polished artifact's drift as a fresh and idiosyncratic problem, the analyst recognizes one recurring shape and reaches for one recovery family. The prime also predicts where the regime will bite hardest: precisely where the abstraction is most authoritative, most embedded, and most expensive to re-anchor, the temptation to treat it as found rather than made is strongest, so the highest-stakes abstractions are the ones most prone to reification.

Abstract Reasoning

Reification supports reasoning about artifact-substrate distance as an independent dimension. It exposes the question of how far an abstraction has drifted from the substrate it was supposed to summarize, and what has happened in the interim that should have been re-anchored. It surfaces the fact that the designer-purpose of the abstraction is a load-bearing piece of context that downstream consumers routinely lose, and that this loss is itself a structural phenomenon rather than a personal failing — a property of how authority and provenance decouple over time, not a sign of carelessness in any particular actor. The prime supports counterfactual reasoning: what would the substrate look like if we re-measured without the model? And it supports adversarial reasoning: if I were attacking this system, where would I exploit the gap between the abstraction and the substrate? Both probes treat the gap between artifact and referent as a real, measurable quantity that can grow, be audited, and be closed, rather than as a binary of right-or-wrong representation. This reframing is what lets reification function as a reasoning tool and not merely a critique: it gives the analyst a dimension to track and a set of moves for tracking it.

Knowledge Transfer

The recovery family ports cleanly across domains, which is the core of the prime's transferability. Re-anchor runs a sample-back from the abstraction to the substrate. Expose provenance asks who built this, when, for what purpose, with what construct-validity claim. Separate analyst-built from observed makes explicit which features were selected and which dropped. Disagreement permission allows critique of the abstraction without denying the substrate's reality. External-coupling probes ask whether the abstraction still predicts or coheres with independent measures of the substrate. A clinician auditing a diagnostic category, a credit analyst auditing a score, a policy analyst auditing GDP, a software team auditing a status flag, and a manager auditing an OKR are doing structurally the same recovery work, and the vocabulary transfers without translation. The role-mapping is fixed: substrate maps to territory / underlying phenomenon / population / business reality; abstraction maps to map / category / score / dashboard / OKR; provenance maps to construction history, selection rule, and faithfulness claim; the recovery maps to sample-back, ground-truth probe, and provenance disclosure. The prime absorbs at least a dozen field-specific terms — commodity fetishism, hypostatization, misplaced concreteness, theme reification, category essentialism, map-territory confusion — that all name the same structural move, and recognizing them as one pattern is what lets a practitioner who has internalized the recovery discipline in one field apply it immediately in another. The discipline the prime carries with it is the standing distinction between the necessary, benign acts of abstraction and representation and the failure regime that appears when both lose their reflective tether.

Examples

Formal/abstract

Map-territory confusion in cartography is the canonical philosophical case and the cleanest way to see every role at work. The substrate is the actual terrain — coastlines, distances, the spatial relations of places on a roughly spherical Earth. The faithfulness-selective abstraction is a map, and a map is unavoidably constructed by deliberate choice: a projection (Mercator, say) selects which properties to preserve and which to sacrifice. Mercator preserves angles and compass bearings (its purpose — marine navigation) and drops faithful area, so high-latitude landmasses are enormously inflated. The implicit faithfulness claim is that the map represents the territory under that convention and for that purpose. Reification is the identification act plus atrophy of the audit trail: a reader forgets the projection was a choice made for navigation and reads Greenland as genuinely comparable in size to Africa — treating a projection-induced distortion as a fact about the geography. The same move hardens administrative boundaries drawn on the map (lines selected for political convenience) into natural kinds of the terrain, as though a watershed or a people changed character at the surveyed line. The recovery is exactly the prime's catalogue: re-anchor by sampling back to the substrate (measure true surface areas), expose provenance (ask which projection, chosen by whom, for what — and what it preserves versus drops), and external-coupling probe (check the map against independent ground measurement). The authority-scales-with-temptation invariant is visible too: the more authoritative and ubiquitous a projection becomes (Mercator's dominance in classrooms and early web maps), the stronger the temptation to read it as the world rather than as one purpose-built summary of it.

Mapped back: The terrain is the substrate, the projected map is the faithfulness-selective abstraction carrying a navigational faithfulness claim, reading area distortions or administrative lines as real geography is the identification act with a lapsed audit trail, and re-measuring true areas plus naming the projection's provenance is the re-anchor/expose-provenance recovery.

Applied/industry

Credit scoring and organizational OKRs are the same provenance-loss failure in two institutional industries. A credit score is a faithfulness-selective abstraction: a model fit on historical data that summarizes selected features (payment history, utilization, account age) into a single number whose implicit faithfulness claim is narrow — it is a statistical prediction of repayment probability for a population, constructed by a particular vendor on a particular sample for a particular purpose. Reification is the routine identification act: lenders, landlords, and even the scored person come to treat the number as a fact about the person's worth or character — "a 580 person" — rather than as a purpose-built repayment forecast, and the audit trail atrophies (which features, whose model, what was dropped, what population it was validated on becomes invisible). The downstream errors are predictable: the score gets optimized against (people manipulate utilization to move the number without changing underlying creditworthiness — the gap between abstraction and substrate exploited), and population shift silently breaks the faithfulness claim no one is checking. The recovery is the prime's: external-coupling probe (does the score still predict default in the current population?), expose provenance, and re-anchor to actual repayment behavior. OKRs and dashboards run the identical structure inside organizations: a metric is built to summarize some business reality (customer satisfaction, engineering throughput), the audit trail to what it stands for atrophies, and teams begin treating hitting the number as the goal itself rather than as a proxy — the classic goal-displacement where the dashboard is treated as the company. The authority-scales-with-temptation invariant bites hardest precisely on the most polished, board-level metric, which is the most expensive to re-anchor and the most tempting to manage-to directly. The cross-industry transfer the prime makes explicit: the credit analyst auditing whether a score still couples to default and the manager auditing whether an OKR still couples to real customer outcomes are running the same recovery discipline.

Mapped back: The credit score and the OKR are faithfulness-selective abstractions of underlying substrates (repayment behavior, business reality); treating the number as a fact about the person or as the goal itself is the identification act with a lapsed audit trail; gaming the metric is the artifact-substrate gap exploited; and external-coupling probes plus re-anchoring are the recovery family shared across a finance and an organizational substrate.

Structural Tensions

T1 — Necessary Abstraction versus Pathological Identification (Scopal). The prime's hardest boundary is that abstraction is unavoidable and benign; only the identification-plus-atrophy is the failure. The competing pull is anti-abstraction overcorrection — concluding that because the map distorts, all models are suspect and should be discarded. The failure mode is throwing out the artifact rather than restoring its tether, paralyzing analysis that genuinely needs the summary. Diagnostic: ask whether the artifact is being identified with its substrate (faithfulness claim invisible) or merely used as a summary (claim live and checkable); the pathology is the lost provenance, not the abstracting, and a fix aimed at the abstraction rather than the tether targets the wrong object.

T2 — Authority versus Re-Anchoring Cost (Scalar). The authority-scales-with-temptation invariant means the most polished, institutionally embedded abstractions are the most expensive to re-anchor and the most tempting to treat as found. The failure mode is inverse vigilance: scrutinizing rough back-of-envelope models while waving through the board-level dashboard precisely because its authority makes re-grounding costly. Diagnostic: ask which abstraction here is most authoritative and least recently checked against its substrate; if audit effort is allocated by ease rather than by stakes, the highest-consequence reification is exactly the one being skipped, and the polish of an artifact should raise, not lower, suspicion.

T3 — Provenance Decay over Time (Temporal). Reification is not a one-time error but a drift: the audit trail atrophies as the artifact passes to downstream consumers who never saw it built, so an abstraction launched with a clear faithfulness claim becomes a found object years later through nobody's single decision. The failure mode is assuming a once-validated artifact stays anchored — trusting that because someone knew the construction history, the current users do. Diagnostic: ask whether anyone currently consuming the artifact can state what it selected and dropped and for what purpose; if provenance lives only in the original designer's head or a deprecated doc, the trail has already decayed, and constitutive context is being lost structurally, not carelessly.

T4 — Artifact-Substrate Gap as Exploitable Surface (Sign/Direction). Treating the abstraction as the substrate creates a measurable gap between them, and that gap is an attack surface: anything optimized against the artifact rather than the substrate moves the number without moving the world (Goodhart, gaming, manipulation). The failure mode is reading metric improvement as substrate improvement when an adversary or even a well-meaning optimizer is exploiting the gap. Diagnostic: ask whether the artifact could be improved without improving the substrate; if yes, the gap is exploitable and likely being exploited, so a rising score under optimization pressure is evidence about the gap, not about the substrate it was meant to track.

T5 — Selected-and-Dropped Features versus Apparent Completeness (Measurement). Every abstraction keeps some features and drops others by deliberate choice, but a polished artifact presents as complete, hiding what it omits. The failure mode is reasoning as though the dropped dimensions do not exist — managing to the OKR while team morale, tech debt, and customer trust (all deselected) silently degrade. Diagnostic: ask what the abstraction deliberately left out and whether those dropped features are now invisible to decision-makers; if the artifact's apparent completeness has erased awareness of its selection rule, the omitted substrate is accumulating unmonitored failures exactly where the summary cannot look.

T6 — Re-Anchoring versus External-Coupling Drift (Temporal). The recovery move assumes the substrate can be re-measured to check the artifact — but the coupling between abstraction and substrate can itself drift, so an artifact validated on one population or era silently decouples (a credit model fit on a past population, a category fit on a prior nosology). The failure mode is trusting a faithfulness claim that was true at construction and has since lapsed, never running the external-coupling probe. Diagnostic: ask whether the abstraction still predicts or coheres with independent measures of the substrate now; a faithfulness claim is not durable, and an artifact that once tracked its referent can become a confident, untethered object purely through the world moving underneath a fixed model.

Structural–Framed Character

Reification sits on the framed side of the structural–framed spectrum, consistent with its frontmatter label and a balanced aggregate of 0.5 across all five criteria. There is a real structural skeleton — a substrate, a faithfulness-selective abstraction, and an identification act in which the audit trail back to the referent atrophies — but the prime is an epistemological failure carrying normative load and a philosophical-critique home, which pulls it evenly across the middle.

The framed pulls are spread, each at a half-measure. The prime carries moderate evaluative weight (0.5): "reification" names a failure — a lost faithfulness discipline, a made object mistaken for a found one — and even though the prime carefully insists the abstraction itself is benign, the move it picks out is a pathology to be corrected, not a neutral fact. Its institutional and human-practice anchoring are partial (0.5 each): the canonical instances — commodity fetishism, map-territory confusion, essentialized diagnostic categories, OKR goal-displacement, credit-score-as-character — sit inside human epistemic and institutional practices, though the cartographic and statistical cases show the structure can be stated with less institutional freight. The vocabulary travels but carries Marxist and critical-theory residue (vocab_travels 0.5), and invoking the prime imports that critique-laden frame to a partial degree (import_vs_recognize 0.5) rather than purely recognizing a substrate-wired pattern. The genuine map/territory structure underneath is why no criterion reads fully framed, but the normative loss-of-discipline content and the philosophical-critique home are exactly what hold every axis at 0.5 and place the prime, as graded, on the framed side.

Substrate Independence

Reification is a strongly substrate-independent prime — composite 4 / 5 on the substrate-independence scale. The structural core is a single canonical move — an abstraction treated as if it were the substrate it was designed to summarize, with the referential audit trail allowed to atrophy — and this map-mistaken-for-territory shape is medium-neutral, giving high structural abstraction. The domain breadth is wide: it recurs in cartography (map-territory confusion, the canonical case), economics and finance (GDP, market cap, or a credit score treated as the thing rather than a constructed measurement), clinical and psychiatric classification (diagnostic categories as natural kinds), organizational practice (the org chart or OKR board as the company), statistical and machine-learning modeling (scores as properties of the person), qualitative research, linguistics, software (schema mistaken for business domain), and bureaucratic and legal forms (a status flag as the underlying state). The transfer evidence is solid because the same recovery move — re-anchoring the artifact to its substrate — applies identically across these fields, and the move is a recognized philosophical commonplace carried under shared map-territory vocabulary. What caps it at 4 is that the pattern always presupposes an abstraction-making agent and an interpreting downstream, so its home is representational practice rather than any physical or biological medium.

Not to Be Confused With

Reification is most fundamentally confused with abstraction itself, and the prime's central discipline is to hold them apart. abstraction is the necessary, value-neutral act of constructing a summary that selectively preserves some features of a substrate and drops others for a purpose — building a map, defining a category, computing a score. It is unavoidable and benign; no thought is possible without it. Reification is not abstraction but a failure that can befall an abstraction: the move in which the constructed summary is identified with the substrate it summarizes and the audit trail back to the referent atrophies, so the made object is reread as a found one and its faithfulness claim becomes invisible and uncheckable. The crucial point is that reification is not bad abstraction — a perfectly faithful, well-constructed abstraction is reified the instant it is treated as the thing itself rather than as a purpose-built summary under a live faithfulness claim. This is why the corrective is never to discard the artifact (that would throw out the necessary abstraction) but to restore the tether — re-anchor, expose provenance, probe external coupling. A practitioner who conflates the two falls into the anti-abstraction overcorrection the prime warns against: concluding that because maps distort, all models are suspect, and paralyzing analysis that genuinely needs summaries. The discriminating question is whether the faithfulness claim is live and checkable (healthy abstraction) or invisible because the artifact is identified with its substrate (reification).

Reification is also confused with goodharts_law, with which it stands in a cause-and-consequence relationship that is easy to collapse. goodharts_law describes what happens when a measure becomes a target: under optimization pressure the proxy decouples from the underlying quantity it was meant to track, so the metric improves while the substrate does not. Reification is the prior move that makes Goodhart possible — it is the identification of the metric with the substrate (the audit trail to "this is a proxy for X" having lapsed) that licenses treating "move the number" as equivalent to "improve the world." In the prime's own terms, reification opens the artifact-substrate gap as an exploitable surface, and Goodhart is the dynamic by which that gap gets exploited under optimization. They are distinct: reification can occur with no optimization at all (a credit score read as a fact about a person's character, with nobody gaming it), and the recognition that a metric is gameable (Goodhart-awareness) is precisely what a live, un-reified faithfulness claim preserves. Confusing the two leads to treating Goodhart as the whole problem — policing gaming behavior — while missing that the root condition is the reification that turned a proxy into a target in the first place; conversely, treating all reification as Goodhart misses the many reifications that produce error without any optimization pressure (essentialized categories, map-territory confusions, untethered models drifting as the world moves).

A narrower confusion is with essentialism, which is in fact one species of reification rather than a separate phenomenon. essentialism treats a category as possessing a fixed, intrinsic inner nature that its members share and that explains their behavior — reading "race," "personality type," or a diagnostic label as a joint in nature rather than a constructed classification. This is reification applied specifically to categories: the constructed category (an abstraction selectively summarizing a population) is identified with a real kind in the substrate, its provenance as a designer's classification scheme forgotten. But reification is broader — it covers not only categories essentialized but scores treated as facts, dashboards treated as the company, maps treated as the terrain, schemas treated as the business domain. Essentialism is what reification looks like when the abstraction in question is a taxonomy; the prime generalizes the move across all abstraction types. A practitioner who knows only essentialism will catch reified categories but miss reified metrics, models, and representational artifacts that are not categorical at all; recognizing essentialism as a special case lets the same recovery discipline (re-anchor, expose provenance) apply uniformly across category, score, map, and model.

These distinctions matter because each isolates the prime's actual content — the identification of an abstraction with its substrate plus the atrophy of the audit trail — from things adjacent to it. abstraction is the benign act reification corrupts; goodharts_law is a downstream dynamic reification enables; essentialism is reification's categorical special case. Holding the prime distinct keeps the corrective aimed at the right target: not abandoning the abstraction (the abstraction error), not merely policing optimization (the Goodhart error), and not confining the concern to taxonomies (the essentialism error), but restoring the reflective tether between any made artifact and the substrate it was built to summarize.
