Paradigm-Case Argument

Answer a sweeping skeptical denial by identifying an actual central case through which the disputed expression is ordinarily taught or applied, while keeping the argument’s semantic premises distinct from stronger metaphysical claims.

Core Idea

A Paradigm-Case Argument (PCA) answers a sweeping philosophical claim that there are no Xs, or that “X” is empty or unintelligible, by pointing to actual central cases in which competent speakers ordinarily teach, explain, and apply “X.” If the case actually occurs and its status as a paradigm fixes or evidences the ordinary extension of the term, the defender concludes that at least some X exists and the universal denial fails.[1][2]

The mature locked identity is skeptical universal denial + ordinary expression X + actual case C + evidence that C occurs + evidence from established linguistic practice that C is a paradigm X + conclusion that at least one X exists in the ordinary sense. The linguistic evidence primarily supports the classification premise. It does not conjure the case into existence.

This two-premise structure matters. It is not enough that a fictional or hypothetical example could teach a word: people can understand “miracle” or “unicorn” without actual instances. A defensible PCA must separately establish that the described case occurs and that it is genuinely central to the relevant use. The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy attributes this mature formulation to Antony Flew: actual cases exist; those cases are paradigms of the denied category; therefore the category has instances.[1][2]

The argument is associated with mid-twentieth-century ordinary language philosophy, especially Norman Malcolm’s “Moore and Ordinary Language” and Flew’s writings.[3][1] Its legitimate reach is limited. It can block a skeptic who silently replaces an ordinary concept with an impossible philosophical standard, but it does not by itself settle a debate explicitly conducted with a revisionary technical concept, supply a complete theory of X, or vindicate every background belief associated with ordinary classification.

  • the burden shift — a skeptic who rejects the classification must explain or revise established use;
  • the background-assumption audit — determine whether speakers classify C as X only because they mistakenly assume some hidden condition;
  • the real-versus-hypothetical test — pedagogical examples alone do not prove instantiation;
  • the ordinary-versus-metaphysical boundary — success against denial in ordinary use need not resolve a distinct technical thesis;
  • the theory limitation — identifying central cases does not reveal a complete necessary-and-sufficient analysis;
  • the therapeutic follow-through — investigate the pictures or standards that made the skeptical denial attractive;
  • the defeater set — semantic disagreement, conceptual revision, error theory, fictional teaching cases, and contested paradigm status.

Recognition requires an inference from actual paradigm and use, not merely the presentation of an example. A textbook’s “paradigm case” used for analogy or casuistry is not automatically a PCA.

What It Is Not

  • Not Prototype Theory. PCA uses central cases in philosophical argument; it is not a psychological model of graded category structure.
  • Not Exemplar Retrieval. Recalling a stored case is cognitive processing, not the skeptical rebuttal.
  • Not reasoning by analogy. The conclusion concerns whether the paradigm itself counts, not whether a new case resembles it.
  • Not ostensive definition alone. Showing an example can teach a term without forming an anti-skeptical argument.
  • Not proof from mere meaningfulness to existence. Fictional and hypothetical terms expose that invalid shortcut.
  • Not appeal to popularity. The premise concerns constitutive or evidential linguistic practice, not vote count.
  • Not common-sense dogmatism. A strong version can investigate and revise ordinary concepts rather than declaring them infallible.
  • Not a complete analysis of X. Paradigms provide a starting point, not exhaustive criteria.
  • Not an irrelevant conclusion by definition. Irrelevance is a possible criticism when the skeptic uses a different concept.
  • Not Kuhn’s scientific paradigm. “Paradigm” here means central exemplar.

Scope of Application

Historically the PCA was used in disputes about material things, perception, knowledge, causation, space, time, solidity, and free action.[1] Malcolm’s version stressed expressions whose meanings allegedly must be shown through instances, such as elementary spatial or color vocabulary. Flew applied the argument to free action by contrasting voluntary conduct with coercion.[2]

The method applies best when the skeptic presents a universal denial using an ordinary expression without announcing a revisionary definition. Suppose someone argues that nobody ever “sees a person” because vision presents only surfaces. Ordinary teaching and correction treat looking at an intact person in normal conditions as a central case of seeing that person. The PCA diagnoses the skeptic as importing a stronger “seeing every part” criterion that ordinary use does not require.[1]

Its force weakens when the debate concerns a stipulative technical category, when ordinary classification relies on a false background theory, or when the alleged paradigm is itself controversial. In those cases the argument may clarify that two concepts are in play without deciding which one philosophical inquiry should adopt.

Clarity

The PCA contains both empirical and conceptual work. “Cases fitting description C occur” is empirical. “C is a paradigm X” is supported by use, teaching, correction, and contrasts. The conclusion follows deductively only after both premises are accepted.

Meaning, application, and existence must not be conflated. A meaningful term can lack instances. An ordinary application can be based on error. A central case can secure a minimal ordinary extension without validating a theoretical account of the case. The argument is strongest as a rebuttal to an unqualified universal denial and weaker as a shortcut to metaphysics.

The target sense should be stated. If the skeptic explicitly uses “free will” for sourcehood independent of prior causes, an ordinary case of uncoerced action may establish free action but not free will. The result may be a diagnosis of equivocation rather than victory for either side.

Manages Complexity

The Paradigm-Case Argument decomposes philosophical stalemate into checkable questions. Does the alleged paradigm occur? How is the term taught and corrected? What contrasts make its application intelligible? Does classification depend on a disputed background assumption? Is the skeptic using the ordinary term or proposing a technical replacement?

This decomposition prevents an impossible ideal from silently colonizing ordinary vocabulary. It also prevents defenders from using ordinary language as a universal veto. Once the minimal extension is secured, deeper questions about causes, mechanisms, value, or metaphysical status can continue.

Abstract Reasoning

  1. If an actual case C occurs and C is correctly classified as a paradigm X, then the claim that no X exists is false.
  2. If C is only hypothetical, its pedagogical usefulness does not establish that any X occurs.
  3. If ordinary speakers classify C as X only because of a false hidden assumption, usage alone may not support the classification premise.
  4. If the skeptic stipulates a technical X* distinct from ordinary X, an ordinary paradigm of X may be irrelevant to X*.
  5. If the skeptic does not announce a revisionary sense, ordinary interpretation creates pressure to address ordinary paradigms.
  6. If paradigm cases establish an extension but not shared necessary features, the PCA succeeds modestly without yielding a theory.
  7. If alleged counterexamples are marginal while the defender’s case is teaching-grade central, burden shifts toward explaining the revision.
  8. If competent use distinguishes voluntary from coerced conduct, causal determination alone may not explain ordinary free-action contrasts.
  9. If a term can be learned from fiction, comprehension does not entail actual denotation.
  10. If the skeptical argument entails rejection of the very cases used to fix its vocabulary, it may reveal a conceptual revision rather than an ordinary factual discovery.

Knowledge Transfer

The exact abstraction transfers across ordinary-language philosophical disputes that share the skeptical denial, central-case evidence, and meaning-setting practice. It can also inform conceptual engineering by separating diagnosis of current use from a proposal to revise that use.

Outside philosophy, the portable residues are Deductive Reasoning, Counterexample, Exemplar, Operationalization, and Burden of Proof. Pointing to a canonical engineering instance may refute “no system does X,” but it becomes a PCA only when linguistic practice and concept application do the distinctive justificatory work.

Examples

  • seeing a person: ordinary visual encounter is a paradigm despite the skeptic’s demand to see every surface and interior part;
  • free action: an adult choosing a desired marriage without threat supplies Flew’s alleged paradigm, conditional on the ordinary concept and full case description;
  • space and time: understanding basic relational terms may depend on acquaintance with actual paradigms in Malcolm’s restricted version;
  • knowledge: an ordinary case of well-supported true belief may block an unqualified claim that nobody ever knows anything, without providing a complete analysis;
  • solidity: central material examples can challenge a philosophical standard that equates solidity with absence of microscopic space;
  • non-example—unicorn: a vivid teaching case explains the term while failing the actuality premise;
  • non-example—prototype categorization experiment: faster responses to central examples study cognition rather than rebut skepticism;
  • failure—concept switch: ordinary uncoerced action is offered against a thesis explicitly about ultimate metaphysical origination.

Structural Tensions

  • therapeutic diagnosis vs. direct engagement — exposing misuse may dissolve a puzzle while leaving the skeptic’s underlying motivations unexamined;
  • stable use vs. linguistic change — paradigms anchor current meaning while practices can evolve;
  • burden shifting vs. dogmatism — asking skeptics to explain revision is fair, but treating usage as unrevisable is not.

Structural–Framed Character

The Paradigm-Case Argument is framed. Its logical skeleton is stable, but the crucial classification premise depends on shared linguistic practices, teaching, correction, and judgments about centrality. It cannot be recognized from formal syntax alone. Different communities or technical projects may legitimately organize the term differently.

Structural Core vs. Domain Accent

The structural core is universal denial + actual counterinstance + warranted classification + existential refutation. The domain accent is ordinary-language philosophy, paradigm teaching cases, semantic practice, skepticism, conceptual revision, and the gap between ordinary and metaphysical senses. Removing that accent yields counterexample or deductive refutation.

  • Deductive Reasoning — accepted actuality and classification premises entail rejection of the universal denial.
  • Counterexample — one actual paradigm defeats a “no X” claim.
  • Burden of Proof — rejection of a central use requires a linguistic or revisionary account.
  • Operationalization — practices make a term’s application observable, though PCA is not measurement design.
  • Framing — ordinary and technical senses can organize the dispute differently.
