Paradigm-Case Argument¶
Answer a sweeping skeptical denial by identifying an actual central case through which the disputed expression is ordinarily taught or applied, while keeping the argument’s semantic premises distinct from stronger metaphysical claims.
Core Idea¶
A Paradigm-Case Argument (PCA) answers a sweeping philosophical claim that there are no Xs, or that “X” is empty or unintelligible, by pointing to actual central cases in which competent speakers ordinarily teach, explain, and apply “X.” If the case actually occurs and its status as a paradigm fixes or evidences the ordinary extension of the term, the defender concludes that at least some X exists and the universal denial fails.
The mature locked identity is skeptical universal denial + ordinary expression X + actual case C + evidence that C occurs + evidence from established linguistic practice that C is a paradigm X + conclusion that at least one X exists in the ordinary sense.
Scope of Application¶
Historically the PCA was used in disputes about material things, perception, knowledge, causation, space, time, solidity, and free action. Malcolm’s version stressed expressions whose meanings allegedly must be shown through instances, such as elementary spatial or color vocabulary. Flew applied the argument to free action by contrasting voluntary conduct with coercion.
The method applies best when the skeptic presents a universal denial using an ordinary expression without announcing a revisionary definition. Suppose someone argues that nobody ever “sees a person” because vision presents only surfaces.
Clarity¶
The PCA contains both empirical and conceptual work. “Cases fitting description C occur” is empirical. “C is a paradigm X” is supported by use, teaching, correction, and contrasts. The conclusion follows deductively only after both premises are accepted.
Meaning, application, and existence must not be conflated. A meaningful term can lack instances. An ordinary application can be based on error.
Manages Complexity¶
The Paradigm-Case Argument decomposes philosophical stalemate into checkable questions. Does the alleged paradigm occur? How is the term taught and corrected? What contrasts make its application intelligible? Does classification depend on a disputed background assumption? Is the skeptic using the ordinary term or proposing a technical replacement?
Abstract Reasoning¶

The exact abstraction transfers across ordinary-language philosophical disputes that share the skeptical denial, central-case evidence, and meaning-setting practice. It can also inform conceptual engineering by separating diagnosis of current use from a proposal to revise that use.
Outside philosophy, the portable residues are Deductive Reasoning, Counterexample, Exemplar, Operationalization, and Burden of Proof. Pointing to a canonical engineering instance may refute “no system does X,” but it becomes a PCA only when linguistic practice and concept application do the distinctive justificatory work.
