Topoi¶

The pre-formed argument templates of rhetorical invention — a finite catalogue of move-forms (definition, a fortiori, cause-and-effect, sign, precedent) whose form is fixed and content variable — so finding arguments becomes an auditable search through a known library rather than creation ex nihilo.

Core Idea¶

Topoi (Greek "places"; Latin loci communes) are the pre-formed argument templates of rhetorical invention: a systematically organized catalogue of argument-generating moves — definition, division, similarity, comparison of degree (a fortiori), cause and effect, argument from sign, argument from precedent — each a structural slot whose content varies by subject but whose form is invariant. Finding arguments is a search through this known library, not creation ex nihilo. Aristotle divided them into koinoi (common across subjects) and idioi (special to a genre); Cicero extended the system into the Latin tradition.

Scope of Application¶

The topoi live across the argument-discovery subfields of rhetoric and its argument-theoretic descendants; built to be portable across disputes, their reach stays within the single substrate of argument.

Clarity¶

Naming the topoi makes legible that invention is a tractable, teachable discipline rather than an unanalyzable gift. Reconceived as a search through a known library, finding arguments becomes a procedure that can be taught, practiced, and audited — the sharp question becomes not "am I clever enough?" but "which topoi have I not yet worked?" It also marks argument-discovery off cleanly from arrangement (dispositio) and wording (elocutio), so a failed speech can be diagnosed to the responsible phase.

Manages Complexity¶

A fresh dispute looks like an unbounded space with no obvious edge. The topoi compress that open-ended problem into a closed, finite traversal of a few dozen argument-forms run against the case in turn. The rhetor tracks two coordinates: which topoi the genre admits (the koinoi/idioi split), and which have been worked. The catalogue supplies the denominator that makes coverage a checkable quantity — completeness is undefined when the space of moves is unenumerated.

Abstract Reasoning¶

The topoi license a generative move (instantiate a template's slots with the dispute's terms); a search-and-coverage move converting generation into a bounded, auditable checklist with a completeness inference; and two boundary-drawing moves — genre-gating via the koinoi/idioi split before generation, and localizing failure within the rhetorical art (invention versus arrangement versus wording, and if invention, which topos went unworked).

Knowledge Transfer¶

Within rhetoric and its neighbors the topoi transfer as mechanism, cleanly, because the apparatus was built to be portable across disputes: the catalogue survives renaming across Cicero's loci, Walton's schemes, topical jurisprudence, and computational argument-mining, the substrate being argument throughout. Beyond argument, what recurs is the meta-pattern the topoi instantiate — a searchable library of named templates — which already has homes in design_patterns (software), system_archetypes (systems dynamics), and strategy frameworks. That parent carries the cross-domain lesson; "topoi" is reserved for its rhetorical realization.
