Belief-Update Protocol¶
Decision protocol — instantiates Dissonance Resolution Pathway
A repeatable private sequence — state the belief and its challenger, calibrate rigor to the stakes, and document a revised belief with its uncertainty — for updating an epistemic conflict without lurching to false certainty.
A Belief-Update Protocol is a repeatable, mostly private sequence an individual — an analyst, clinician, or forecaster — runs to move a specific belief in response to disconfirming evidence. It names the current belief and the claim now contradicting it as an explicit pair, decides how much rigor the stakes and reversibility of being wrong actually demand, and records the revised belief with an uncertainty attached, rather than flipping to a new certainty. Its defining feature — against an externalized evidence matrix or a group workshop — is that it disciplines one mind's epistemic conflict, and it treats the update as a graded, documented shift in credence, not a public negotiation and not a wall chart. It is the mechanism for the moment when the honest move is to write down that you were partly wrong.
Example¶
A supply-chain analyst named Priya holds a forecast: a product line will grow about 8% next quarter — the belief her replenishment orders rest on. Three weeks of point-of-sale data come in flat. The protocol makes her state the pair out loud rather than smoothing it over: "belief: +8% growth; contradicting evidence: three weeks flat." That single step blocks the reflex to file the data under "seasonal noise" and move on. Because the stakes here are moderate and reversible — orders can be corrected next cycle — she does not commission a study; she assigns the flat weeks a weight and asks what a genuine 8% trajectory would look like by now. It would not look flat. She documents the revision: growth marked down to roughly 2% with a wide band, plus a note that two more flat weeks would pull it toward zero. She has not swung from optimism to doom; she has moved her credence a defined amount and written down what would move it again.
How it works¶
Its value is in the fixed order of a few small steps, which is what keeps a private update honest:
- State the pair — write the standing belief and the contradicting claim side by side, so the conflict cannot be blurred.
- Calibrate rigor to stakes — decide how much evidence and scrutiny the update warrants given the cost and reversibility of being wrong.
- Assign uncertainty — move the belief in graded increments and attach a confidence, instead of forcing a clean verdict.
- Document the revision and its trigger — record the changed belief and what further evidence would change it again.
Tuning parameters¶
- Update-size discipline — incremental versus wholesale; small proportional moves resist overreaction but can under-respond to strong evidence.
- Rigor-to-stakes ratio — how much scrutiny the update earns per unit of consequence; high-stakes, hard-to-reverse beliefs justify more.
- Uncertainty representation — a point estimate, a range, or an explicit probability; richer representations carry more information but demand more discipline.
- Documentation formality — a margin note versus a logged decision; formality aids later audit but slows the loop.
- Re-trigger threshold — how much new evidence must accumulate before the belief is revisited again.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it blocks both failure directions at once: the denial that explains disconfirming evidence away, and the overreaction that flips from one certainty to another. Because the pair, the weighting, and the revised credence are written down, the update is auditable — you can see later whether you moved for good reasons.
Its central failure mode is that the protocol can launder confirmation bias: you go through every step but quietly set the disconfirming evidence's weight to near zero, and the ritual lends the non-update an air of rigor. A related misuse is forcing premature certainty — collapsing a genuinely uncertain belief into a firm new one just to feel resolved.
