Current Use Mapping¶
Method — instantiates Function-Without-Intent Caution
Maps current users, beneficiaries, maintainers, constraints, and harms so an originally unintended function is still evaluated for present-day consequences.
Current Use Mapping takes a named function and charts the living field around it right now: who uses it, who benefits, who is harmed, who maintains it, and what constraints hold it in place. Its defining move is present-tense and consequential — it deliberately brackets the questions of origin and intent to keep the analysis from becoming a purely historical debate, insisting that even a function no one designed still has present-day beneficiaries and victims who must be accounted for. Where a genealogy asks "how did this come to be?" Current Use Mapping asks "who is standing in its path today, and who has the leverage to change it?" — and it carries the map straight into an intervention implication, naming which actor could redesign, mitigate, preserve, or stop the function.
Example¶
A hospital's emergency-department triage protocol, written years ago to speed the sickest patients to care, now also functions to systematically deprioritize a class of chronic-pain patients whose presentations score low on its acuity scale. No one designed it to do that. Current Use Mapping charts the present field. The current use map identifies the actors: triage nurses applying the score, the chronic-pain patients cycling through repeat visits, the specialists downstream, the software vendor whose scale is baked into the intake screen. The beneficiary-harm map is explicit: acute trauma patients benefit (faster routing); chronic-pain patients are harmed (delayed and repeat care); nurses bear the moral weight; the hospital saves triage time. Then the intervention implication: because the harm enters through one weighting in the vendor's scale and is applied by nurses who already notice the problem, the actionable lever is a protocol override plus a scale-configuration change — not a staffing overhaul. The map converts "the triage system is unfair" into "these specific people are harmed here, and this specific actor can change it."
How it works¶
- Enumerate the roles, not the history. List current users, beneficiaries, maintainers, and harmed parties by name/role; leave origin to the genealogy.
- Draw the beneficiary–harm ledger. Put who gains and who loses side by side, including diffuse or silent losers a headline function hides.
- Locate the maintenance leverage. Identify who actually keeps the function running and who could alter it — the constraint holding it in place is the intervention's real target.
- Close on an implication. End every map with a named actor and a concrete lever (redesign / mitigate / preserve / stop), not a description.
Tuning parameters¶
- Stakeholder breadth — how wide the net is cast for affected parties. Wider catches silent losers but dilutes focus; narrow risks missing the people the function quietly costs.
- Harm resolution — how finely harms are disaggregated across subgroups. Finer surfaces distributional injustice; coarser is faster but averages away the worst-hit.
- Leverage depth — whether the map stops at "who maintains it" or traces to "who could change it and at what cost." Deeper is more actionable, more effortful.
- Present-tense strictness — how firmly origin/intent questions are held out. Strict keeps the map action-focused; loose lets the analysis drift back into history.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it blocks the archetype's "lack-of-intent excuse" head-on: by making present beneficiaries and victims concrete, it keeps an unintended function from being waved away because no one meant it, and it hands the decision a named actor and lever. Its failure mode is presentism — a snapshot of the current field can mistake a transient arrangement for a permanent one, and can misassign responsibility if it never checks how the function arose.[n1] The classic misuse is mapping current harm and leaping to blame the current maintainer as if they authored the function, skipping the intent question entirely. The guarding discipline is to pair the map with Institutional Genealogy for origin and Intent Audit for culpability, so that "who can fix it" is never silently converted into "who is guilty of it."
How it implements the components¶

It does NOT trace the historical origin of the function (origin_function_distinction, counterfactual_origin_test) — that's Institutional Genealogy — and does NOT establish the bare descriptive function and its mechanism first (observed_function, causal_pathway_context) — that's Functional Analysis; both are its same-type siblings.
