Functional Analysis¶
Method — instantiates Function-Without-Intent Caution
Identifies what a pattern currently does for different actors or systems, while treating function as an observation rather than proof of intent.
Functional Analysis is the descriptive opening move of the archetype: it answers "what does this pattern actually do, and by what mechanism does it do it?" — and then, deliberately, stops. Its defining discipline is a rule of restraint: state the function as an observed effect, name the causal pathway that produces the effect, and refuse the extra half-sentence that quietly upgrades a consequence into a purpose ("...and therefore it was made for that"). A function is data about what a pattern does for some actor or system; it is not a window into anyone's aims, nor proof that the pattern was designed, selected, or intended for that role. Functional Analysis builds the clean descriptive base every other mechanism in the archetype then argues over.
Example¶
A nature documentary asserts that "zebras evolved stripes to confuse lions." A field biologist runs Functional Analysis instead of accepting the purpose story. She starts with the observed function: she catalogs what the coat pattern measurably does rather than what it is "for." Comparing striped coats against plain ones, the most robust current effect she can point to is reduced landing by biting tabanid flies; there are weaker candidate effects around thermoregulatory airflow and individual recognition within a herd. She then traces the causal pathway for the strongest one — high-contrast edges appear to disrupt a fly's optical-flow approach in the final centimeters before landing, so the insect overshoots or veers off. Her write-up reads: "the coat pattern currently functions to lower biting-fly contact via visual disruption of landing; it may secondarily do X and Y." Notice what is absent: no claim that stripes evolved in order to confuse predators. Three rival "purpose" narratives collapse into one honest statement of current function plus mechanism, and the separate question of evolutionary origin is left open for the evidence it actually requires.
How it works¶
- Name the effect, not the aim. Write the function as a verb acting on someone — "reduces fly contact," "excludes late applicants," "surfaces disagreement" — never as "is meant to."
- Trace the producing mechanism. Say how the effect is generated (the physical, incentive, or informational chain), so "it does X" becomes "it does X because Y." A function without a mechanism is a guess dressed as a finding.
- Hold multiple functions at once. A single pattern usually does several things; list them side by side rather than crowning one as "the" function and demoting the rest.
- Stop at description. Origin, intent, beneficiaries, and remedy are explicitly out of scope and get handed to other mechanisms.
Tuning parameters¶
- Function granularity — one headline function or a decomposed list. Finer decomposition catches secondary and cross-actor effects but risks drowning the dominant function in noise.
- Mechanism depth — how far down the causal chain you trace before stopping. Deeper is more defensible but slower, and past a point it becomes its own investigation.
- Actor/system frame — whose vantage defines "function" (in the example: the fly's, the zebra's, or the herd's). Switching frames changes what counts as the function; naming the frame prevents smuggling in a favored one.
- Description-only strictness — how hard you police the boundary against intent language. Tighter keeps the base clean; looser reads more fluently but leaks purpose claims back in.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it forces a disciplined descriptive floor before anyone argues about blame or design — which is exactly the input the rest of the archetype needs. Its failure mode is the just-so slide: once a plausible current function is on the page, it is nearly irresistible to narrate it as the reason the pattern exists, converting a latent function into an imagined design.[n1] The classic misuse is presenting a compelling present-day function as evidence of original purpose ("it works so well it must have been intended"). The guarding discipline is to keep the observation-only rule bright and to route every "was it for that?" question to Intent Audit or Institutional Genealogy rather than answering it here.
How it implements the components¶
observed_function— its primary product: a mechanism-grounded statement of what the pattern currently does, phrased as effect rather than aim.causal_pathway_context— it names the chain that produces the function, so the description is explanatory rather than a bare correlation.
It does NOT trace how the function arose over time (origin_function_distinction) — that's Institutional Genealogy — and does NOT inventory who currently benefits or is harmed (beneficiary_harm_map) — that's Current Use Mapping.

Functional Analysis is intentionally incomplete on its own — the archetype warns that functional analysis "without intent checking and attribution boundaries can still overclaim purpose." Treat its output as a premise other mechanisms interrogate, never as a finished explanation.
