Curriculum method — instantiates Cognitive Workflow Sequencing
Orders practice from prerequisite concepts toward integrated performance, with support that fades and load that stays manageable as competence builds.
A Learning Progression orders the concepts and skills of a domain so that each one is placed after the things it depends on, keeps the new material at every step within a learner's working-memory reach, and fades its supports as competence grows — building toward integrated performance by a path where every step is reachable from the last. Its defining idea is that the content ordering itself is the mechanism: unlike an onboarding sequence, there is no mentor signing off gates and no transfer of real-world responsibility — the sequence lives in how the material is arranged and metered. It is the abstract skill-dependency spine that other, richer mechanisms can wrap.
Example¶
A Japanese-language school does not start beginners on kanji-dense newspapers. The progression orders it. First the two phonetic scripts, hiragana and katakana, until a learner can sound out any word. Then basic sentence particles and a core hundred words. Then common kanji introduced roughly in frequency order, each paired with the vocabulary that already uses it. Then short graded dialogues. Only then unstructured conversation and native reading. Each level assumes command of the prior one. Early on, learners read with furigana — small phonetic readings printed over the kanji — a scaffold that quietly disappears as the characters become familiar, and each lesson introduces only a handful of new characters so the load never spikes. A learner reaches genuine reading fluency by a route where no step demanded a prerequisite that was not already in place.
How it works¶
- Ordered by prerequisite dependency. Each skill or concept is placed after everything it relies on; later work assumes earlier mastery.
- New material metered. Only a bounded amount of novelty per step, so working-memory load stays within reach.
- Scaffolds fade. Worked examples, reading aids, and controlled vocabulary support early steps and are withdrawn as mastery grows.
- Integration deferred. Composite, real-world performance comes after the component skills are individually solid.
- Content-defined, not person-gated. The order is the mechanism; there is no sign-off owner, which is what distinguishes it from onboarding.
Tuning parameters¶
- Step size — small increments versus larger leaps; smaller for novices, larger where learners can bridge gaps themselves.
- Load ceiling per step — how much new material at once; lower ceilings slow the pace but protect struggling learners.
- Scaffold fade schedule — how quickly aids withdraw; fading too slowly bores and burdens advancing learners.
- Spiral versus linear — revisiting earlier concepts at higher complexity versus strictly forward motion; spiraling reinforces but costs time.
- Mastery threshold — how much command is required before advancing; higher thresholds ensure prerequisites but stall the impatient.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that every step is reachable: it refuses to expose complexity before its prerequisites, so a learner rarely hits a wall built from a missing foundation. It is the natural backbone for curricula, training tracks, and skill ladders.
Its failure mode is the expertise reversal effect[1] — the supports and fine-grained steps that help a novice actively slow an expert, so a progression that never fades its scaffolds or never lets a capable learner skip ahead becomes a drag on the very people it was meant to help. The classic misuse is forcing advanced learners through beginner scaffolds "for completeness." The guarding discipline is to fade supports and offer fast paths as competence appears, and to keep the ordering justified by genuine dependencies rather than by tradition or the order a textbook happened to use.
How it implements the components¶
cognitive_prerequisite_map— the ordering encodes which concepts and skills must precede which, making the dependency structure explicit.scaffold_point— worked examples and reading aids are inserted where the next step would overload, then withdrawn.load_check— metering the amount of new material per step keeps simultaneous cognitive demand within reach.
It does not gate advancement with a sign-off or assign a live owner (Onboarding Sequence), and it does not order a group's phases or place a commitment (Structured Review Sequence and Stepwise Decision Protocol).
