Narrative Momentum Stress Test¶
Diagnostic test — instantiates Higher-Order Expectation Anchoring
A one-off adversarial probe that asks whether a rising trend is climbing on fundamentals or purely because everyone expects everyone else to keep climbing it.
A Narrative Momentum Stress Test interrogates one specific surging trend to find out whether its momentum has any contact with underlying reality or is a pure expectation-of-expectations loop. Its defining move is an adversarial fundamental check applied to a single narrative: strip away the price action and the "everyone's in" story, and ask whether any independent fundamental actually moved. It is a probe, not a standing instrument — a one-off audit run when a trend gets loud enough to demand scrutiny, delivering a grounded-or-ungrounded verdict rather than a continuous read. It enumerates the signals driving the trend only in order to test each against a fundamental; the signal surface is the object under interrogation, not the deliverable.
Example¶
A crypto token climbs roughly 300% in a week and the timeline fills with "this is going to the moon." Before an investment committee acts on the momentum, an analyst runs a Narrative Momentum Stress Test on that single asset. She lists the signals actually driving it: social-post volume, a handful of influencer endorsements, on-chain buy velocity, and the price chart itself. Then she stress-tests each against a fundamental reference — protocol usage, fee revenue, active addresses. The finding is stark: usage is flat, revenue unchanged, and every signal she listed reduces to the expectation that others will keep buying. The chart is citing the chart. The verdict — reflexive, no fundamental contact — is a diagnosis of this one trend at this one moment, not an ongoing monitor.
How it works¶
The test isolates one trend and runs an adversarial pass. It enumerates the visible signals feeding the momentum, then subjects each to a single question: independent evidence, or recursive inference from earlier signals? Each signal is checked against an explicitly named fundamental reference — the underlying quantity the narrative claims to be about. If the signals survive contact with fundamentals, the trend is graded grounded; if they collapse into "others expect others to continue," it is graded reflexive. The output is a verdict with its reasoning, produced once, on demand — the test does its work by being sharp and adversarial, not by running forever.
Tuning parameters¶
- Fundamental reference — which underlying quantity the trend is tested against. A well-chosen reference exposes hollow momentum; a poorly-chosen one either whitewashes a bubble or condemns a real move.
- Adversarial stringency — how hard the probe pushes each signal to justify itself. Higher stringency catches subtle loops but can flag genuine early network effects as froth.
- Signal scope — how many of the trend's drivers are put under the test. Broader scope is more thorough but dilutes focus on the decisive signal.
- Verdict threshold — how much fundamental contact is required to pass. A strict bar rarely lets a bubble through but rejects real trends whose value is partly coordination.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it distinguishes a grounded move from an information cascade — a sequence in which each actor rationally infers value from others' visible choices[1] until the crowd is following the crowd and no one is following the evidence. Applied at the right moment, it can puncture a self-referential story before a decision is anchored to it.
Its failure mode is that fundamentals are sometimes genuinely hard to define, and in coordination goods some value really is the coordination: a network's worth partly is that others expect to use it, so a too-stringent test can cry "bubble" at a real network effect. The classic misuse is wielding the test selectively — running it only on trends one already dislikes and waving through the ones one favors. The guarding discipline is to name the fundamental reference in advance and out loud, and to concede honestly that a portion of some trends' value is legitimately expectational rather than forcing every signal to reduce to hard fundamentals.
How it implements the components¶
fundamental_reference_check— testing each signal against a named underlying quantity is the mechanism's core act; the verdict is the report of whether the trend retains evidential contact.public_choice_signal_surface— it enumerates the visible cues feeding the momentum, but only as the raw material to be interrogated against fundamentals.
It is a one-off probe, not the continuous expectation_feedback_monitor of its nearest twin, the Common-Belief Dashboard, which watches the whole surface live rather than auditing one trend. And it delivers a verdict but does not act on it — voiding a detached anchor and restarting the field is the expectation_reset_trigger of the Expectation Reset Announcement.
