Higher-Order Expectation Anchoring is a merge-sensitive solution archetype for cases where actors are no longer choosing only from direct evidence or private preference. They are choosing according to what they expect others will expect. The pattern makes the recursive belief field visible, protects first-order information, and supplies a credible focal anchor that can become common knowledge.

How the intervention works¶
The intervention starts by separating belief layers. A private preference, a belief about facts, a prediction of what others will choose, and a prediction of what others think others will choose are different objects. When these are collapsed, public signals become dangerously self-referential.
Once the belief layers are separated, the designer maps the signal surface: polls, rankings, prices, dashboards, visible endorsements, silence, defaults, public commitments, and narrative momentum. Some signals contain independent information. Others mostly reflect expectations about expectations. The archetype depends on telling those apart.
The system then installs a focal anchor: a criterion, rule, commitment, schedule, benchmark, evidence packet, or procedure that actors can reasonably expect others to use. The anchor must be made common knowledge. It is not enough that each actor privately receives it; actors must also understand that others have received it and how it should be interpreted.
Finally, the system monitors for drift. If the anchor becomes manipulable, if popularity signals leak too early, if silence is misread as agreement, or if a public narrative starts selecting itself, the expectation field is paused or reset.
