Timeboxed Search with Stop Gate¶
Bounded search gate — instantiates Satisficing Threshold Design
Sets a fixed budget of time, effort, and attention for search before it starts, then at the boundary runs a governed gate that either accepts the best qualifier found, grants one evidence-based extension, or escalates — so search closes on a clock, not on exhaustion.
A Timeboxed Search with Stop Gate bounds the search itself, not the acceptance bar. Its defining move is to spend a pre-set budget of time, attention, and effort and then, at the boundary, force a governed stop gate: accept the best qualifier found so far, grant one evidence-justified extension, or escalate — with no fourth option of "just keep looking." Where an aspiration rule stops the moment a candidate clears the bar, this mechanism's trigger is the expiring budget: it exists for the case where comparison could go on indefinitely and the real cost is the delay, so it makes the cost of more search explicit and compares it against the expected gain at a fixed checkpoint. The timebox converts an open-ended hunt into a decision that must be made when the clock runs out.
Example¶
A newsroom editor assigns a feature and gives the reporter a two-week reporting timebox before a fixed publication slot. The budget is set before reporting begins: ten working days, a target of a dozen sources across three perspectives, and a hard gate on the Friday of week two. The reporter could always find one more expert, one more document — sourcing has no natural end — so the delay, not the search, is the binding cost against a print deadline. At the gate, the editor runs the stop rule: the story has cleared the sourcing bar, so it is accepted and scheduled. Had a key source failed to materialize, the editor's options would have been narrow and governed — grant a single, evidence-based extension (a named source confirmed for Monday) or escalate to swap the slot — not an open-ended slide. The timebox did not lower the standard for a story; it forced the reporting to close on the calendar instead of drifting until someone lost patience.
How it works¶
- Set the budget before search starts. Fix the time, effort, attention, and information budget up front, sized to the decision's consequence and the cost of delay.
- Estimate the value of more search. Make explicit what an additional increment of search is expected to gain, so the gate compares that gain against its delay cost rather than against a feeling.
- Hold the gate at the boundary. When the budget is spent, choose among a fixed menu — accept the best qualifier, extend once on evidence, or escalate — and record the rationale.
- Bound the extension. Any extension is single, evidence-triggered, and limited; the gate is not a soft suggestion that resets whenever it is inconvenient.
Tuning parameters¶
- Budget size — how much time and effort the search may spend. A generous budget improves coverage but raises delay cost; a tight one closes fast but risks a thin search.
- Extension policy — whether, how often, and on what evidence the gate may be pushed. A one-extension rule preserves the deadline's force; open-ended extension dissolves it.
- Consequence tier — how budget and gate stringency scale with the stakes and reversibility of the decision. Higher tiers earn more search; low-stakes choices are closed cheaply.
- Gate menu — which actions the stop gate permits (accept / extend / escalate / fallback). A richer menu handles edge cases; a leaner one resists gaming.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it kills the open-ended search — the one that expands to consume whatever time is available — by pricing delay and forcing a decision at a checkpoint; this is the timeboxing discipline familiar from agile practice, and its rationale is Parkinson's Law, that work expands to fill the time allotted for it unless a boundary is set.[n1] Its failure mode is a rushed, low-quality search crammed into too small a box, or the opposite — an "automatic" extension that quietly makes the budget fictional. The classic misuse is a manufactured deadline: fabricated time pressure used to shrink review and stampede a decision. The guarding discipline is a budget sized to consequence, an independent check on any claimed urgency, and a one-extension-on-evidence rule so the gate stays real without becoming a cage.

Nor does it authorize skipping the ordinary threshold under verified urgency (exception_and_escalation_rule); a genuine emergency escape is Emergency Temporary Threshold, not a routine timebox.
