Multi Dimensional Solution Space Exploration¶
Before narrowing, deliberately vary independent design dimensions—such as function, form, user context, cost, risk, sustainability, material, channel, governance, and time horizon—so convergence selects from a genuinely broad solution space rather than from the first visible family of options.
The Diagnostic Story¶
Symptom: After a full brainstorm session all the concepts on the wall share the same form, platform, or business model despite their different names. Sustainability, accessibility, lifecycle, or governance dimensions appeared only after the concept was already chosen. The team cannot explain which regions of the design space were explored and which were quietly ignored, and a later review discovers obvious alternatives that were never seriously considered.
Pivot: Create a temporary divergence structure that names the relevant solution dimensions, explores each independently enough to prevent premature collapse, records coverage and blind spots, and recombines options across axes — so convergence selects from a genuinely broad option set rather than from the first visible family of solutions.
Resolution: The option set handed to convergence is less path-dependent; neglected tradeoffs and hidden design assumptions surface earlier; stakeholders can locate disagreements on explicit dimensions rather than fighting over a single concept; and the probability of finding robust or integrated solutions increases.
Reach for this when you hear…¶
[product design] “We ran a two-hour ideation session and every concept was a mobile app — nobody questioned whether the problem needed an app at all.”
[urban planning] “Every proposal assumed car-centric infrastructure because that's what the engineers know, and the sustainability team wasn't in the room until week six.”
[policy development] “We explored three versions of the same regulatory approach and called it exploring the solution space, but we never asked whether regulation was even the right instrument.”
