Paradox Reframing

Use an apparent contradiction to reveal hidden assumptions, collapsed meanings, or missing levels of analysis so a new action path becomes possible.

The Diagnostic Story

Symptom: Two apparently valid claims cannot both fit inside the current frame, and the group is stuck. Participants argue for one side, oscillate between poles, or produce clever explanations that do not change any decision. The same evidence supports opposing interpretations; stakeholders use the same words to mean different things; every option available seems to violate one stated value. The contradiction recurs, which signals that the problem is structural rather than a one-off misunderstanding.

Pivot: The structural move is to treat the contradiction as an inspectable object rather than a debate to be won. Convert the apparent paradox into a visible structure, identify the hidden assumption, collapsed scope, or mixed level of analysis that makes it seem impossible, and test whether a reframe can preserve what is true on each side while opening a concrete path to action.

Resolution: The group gains a precise statement of the apparent contradiction, visible hidden assumptions, and a reframed problem statement that makes new moves possible. Either/or deadlock gives way to clearer decisions, experiments, or designs. What remains genuinely unresolved is named as such, along with a trigger for when the reframe should be revisited.
