A Graduated Public Exposure Sequence is the forward-running procedure that actually moves a position across venues, one controlled step at a time: private review, then a small trusted forum, then piloted language in a semi-public setting, then open public explanation, then — if it earns it — broader institutional consideration. Its defining concern is ordering and dosage in real time: which venue next, carried by whom, at what intensity, before the next step. Where a window map shows where a position could go and a retrospective looks back at where it went, this sequence is the live escalation ladder that governs each rung as it is climbed. It pairs the ladder with a deliberate choice of carriers and venues at every stage, because a step's safety depends as much on who says it and where as on the words. It stages the movement; it does not decide whether the movement is warranted or record it afterward.

A professional engineering society wants to open discussion of a stricter fatigue-inspection standard that many members privately support but that threatens established practice and a few large firms' cost structures — making it, for now, unsayable in the society's public channels. How it works¶
- Order the rungs by exposure intensity. Arrange venues from least to most public and charged — private, small trusted forum, semi-public pilot, open public, institutional — so each step is a bounded increment, not a leap.
- Gate each rung on the last. Advance only when the prior step held without ignition; a bad reaction means holding, repeating, or stepping back down, never skipping ahead.
- Match carrier to rung. Choose, for each step, a speaker and venue whose trust and reach fit that intensity — a respected insider for an early closed room, a credible public figure only once the position is ready for open air.
- Dose the framing. Escalate not just the venue but the boldness of the language — from "some are asking whether" to a named proposal — keeping intensity a step behind what the audience can absorb.

- Step size — how far apart adjacent rungs sit. Small steps are safe but slow and can stall; large steps move fast but court shock and backlash.
- Advancement gate — how clean a rung must be before climbing. Strict gating prevents ignition but can trap a position in perpetual "not yet"; loose gating risks premature public exposure.
- Carrier trust vs. reach — trusted-insider carriers early versus high-reach carriers later. Trust reduces fear; reach spreads the idea but concentrates power over what becomes sayable.
- Venue privacy gradient — how gradually rooms open. A gentle gradient protects against premature virality but multiplies the stages to run.
- Reversibility per rung — how easily a step can be walked back if it goes badly. High reversibility encourages bolder steps but requires the language to stay provisional longer.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is preventing backlash ignition, the archetype's signature failure, by refusing the shock jump: a position introduced through trusted carriers in the right-sized room, tested before it goes wide, can become discussable without triggering the panic that a premature public splash provokes. It also gives each step an off-ramp, so a misstep costs one rung rather than the whole effort.
