Core idea

A discourse window is the set of positions that can be named, considered, or proposed without unacceptable social cost. It is not the same as truth, consensus, endorsement, or policy adoption. It is a social boundary around discussability.

This archetype applies when that boundary itself is the design object. Sometimes a useful or necessary adjacent option cannot be discussed because the status cost is too high. Sometimes a harmful position becomes familiar through repetition before anyone has made a legitimate decision to accept it. An acceptability window map is useful early because it makes the boundary visible. Exposure laundering occurs when repetition makes a position feel normal and the system treats that familiarity as proof of legitimacy. The mitigation is to maintain evidence gates, non-endorsement language, counterframe registers, and a window-shift record.

Backlash ignition

Backlash often appears when the exposure ladder jumps too fast, when the carrier lacks trust, or when exploratory discussion is framed as a decision already made. The mitigation is to step back to adjacent positions, safer venues, slower cadence, and affected-party review.

Elite capture

A discourse window can be controlled by high-status actors who decide what is discussable while others pay the social cost. The mitigation is to map speaker-specific costs, diversify carriers, and protect dissent and affected-party channels.

Dissent erasure

A window shift can be narrated as consensus while objections are recoded as irrational, immoral, or backward. The mitigation is to keep unresolved objections visible through minority reports, counterframe registers, and scheduled review.

Taboo flattening

Some boundaries protect sacred values, dignity, trauma, or safety. Treating those boundaries as mere resistance to innovation can cause harm. The mitigation is to route the case through taboo boundary navigation and stronger consent/safety safeguards.
