Domains of Human Knowledge¶
64 domains in 8 broad families — the intellectual traditions in which the catalog's prime abstractions originated. Each prime is tagged with one primary origin domain (and optionally one or more alternate origins where the idea has co-equal claim); browsing by domain lets you trace which traditions have contributed which primes to the catalog.
The grouping into families is a reading aid, not a hierarchy — it exists to make the 66-domain list searchable in chunks. Within each section, every domain carries a prose description and a short list of neighboring domains with the kind of relationship that connects them (shared formalism, applied vs. theoretical, etc.).
| Group | Domains | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Formal Sciences | 4 | The study of abstract structure. |
| Natural Sciences | 8 | The study of the physical and biological world. |
| Applied Sciences & Engineering | 14 | Scientific and mathematical knowledge applied to the design, construction, and operation of artefacts and systems. |
| Social Sciences | 9 | Systematic study of human collective life — behavior, institutions, power, exchange — using quantitative and interpretive methods together. |
| Humanities | 8 | Interpretive study of human meaning-making — texts, objects, ideas, traditions, and the categories that organize experience. |
| Arts & Aesthetic Practice | 4 | The creative practice of making works in visual, performing, and time-based media, together with the theory and criticism of those works. |
| Professional & Organizational Practice | 11 | Domains defined primarily by an organized practice — a profession, a body of methods, or a managerial discipline — rather than by a single theoretical core. |
| Interdisciplinary & Synthetic | 6 | Domains that emerged as deliberate syntheses of older fields, or as methodologies exported across many fields. |
