Geologic Landforms & Crustal Deformation¶
Abstractions about how tectonic stress and surface transport shape the crust — fault types (normal, thrust, transform) and their slip mechanics, landform-building processes like alluvial fans and karst dissolution, and hazard cascades like landslide-dam failure and subsidence.

- Alluvial Fan — The fan-shaped sediment landform built where a confined, sediment-laden channel exits a steep upland at a slope break, loses transport competence, and deposits its load coarse-to-fine as successive lobes avulse radially around the apex.
- Fault — A frictionally-controlled discontinuity in rock across which the two sides slip under tectonic loading — decomposed into discontinuity, stress field, and friction law, from which the friction regime selects quiet creep versus locked stick-slip rupture, and geometry fixes earthquake style and size.
- Karst — Diagnose a landscape where acidic groundwater has dissolved soluble bedrock into a self-reinforcing hidden conduit network, so the surface no longer maps the subsurface drainage and porous-media terrain rules are suspended.
- Landslide-Dam Failure — The two-stage natural-hazard cascade in which mass wasting dams a valley, impounds a lake, and later fails — releasing a downstream outburst flood usually larger than the landslide, because the unengineered barrier is itself the hazard's storage element.
- Mass Wasting — Predict whether a slope fails by comparing resisting to driving force on a specified shear surface as a single factor-of-safety ratio, stable above unity and failing below it, with gravity as the sole transport agent.
- Normal Fault — A fracture in the crust where the hanging wall has dropped relative to the footwall along a plane dipping near 60°, whose hanging-wall-down dip-slip geometry is the diagnostic signature of horizontal extension in the crust.
- Risk Transfer Without Reduction — The maladaptation pattern in which an adaptation or defence lowers risk at a protected site by displacing the unchanged hazard onto a voiceless neighbour, catchment, or future generation — because it acts on one node's exposure rather than the generative pressure.
- Subsidence — Explain the downward descent of the ground surface as loss or rearrangement of subsurface support, routed through one channel — a change in the Terzaghi effective-stress state — so any driver's cause and reversibility read off a single ledger.
- Thrust Fault — A compressional fault on which the hanging wall rides up and over the footwall along a low-angle plane in response to horizontal crustal shortening, diagnosed by its inverted stratigraphic signature — older rocks resting on younger — the fingerprint of a block transported from greater depth or farther back in a shortened stack.
- Transform Fault — Classify a plate boundary as the conservative one — where two plates slide horizontally past each other creating and consuming no crust — so that its slip is fixed entirely by plate relative motion, and read basins, ranges, quakes, and seafloor scars off termination, bend polarity, and segment length.
- Uplift — The vertical raising of Earth's crust recast as a rate — the time derivative of rock or surface height — driven by one of four mechanically distinct forces and read as a balance among three quantities (surface uplift, rock uplift, exhumation) that can carry opposite signs at once.
- Watershed — Bound the space of contributing sources for any point in a river to the terrain-defined area draining to a common outlet, then exploit the asymmetric upstream-downstream coupling — everything propagates down, nothing back up against gravity — to fix search direction and intervention shape.
